You can but today’s recipe works way better because it contains less butter, no egg and includes baking powder so you get a light and fluffy empanada while baking.
If you love to bake sweet empanadas you can add some sugar to the dough as well to give it a bit more flavor.
Always role your empanada into thin discs or shells else you get a lot of dough while frying.
The result of fried empanada should be a balance between thin dough and filling.
Empanada dough for frying ingredients
To make this dough recipe you need a number of ingredients. So get the following ingredients out of your kitchen pantry or get on your grocery shopping run:
- All-purpose flour
- Sparkling water
- Orange juice
- Baking powder
How to make empanada dough for frying
To make this recipe take a kitchen machine and add the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar (if you are using it).
Pulse the kitchen machine to mix the ingredients together. Take the butter and cut it into small pieces. Add the butter into the kitchen machine.
Pulse the machine until the butter and flour are mixed together and it will have a sand-like texture. Now it is time to add the sparkling water.
Run the kitchen machine and add the water. Then you can add the orange juice. Pulse and mix until the dough start to form.
Take the dough ball out of the kitchen machine and knead lightly by hand and add some flour to prevent the dough from sticking.
Wrap the dough in some cling film and set it aside so it can rest at room temperature. If you are not using it straight away put it in the fridge.
Make the discs using a rolling pin and an empanada mold to cut out the circles. You can also use a small plate and cut the empanada.
If you own a tortilla press cut ball of about 1.5 to 2 oz and press them in the tortilla press. Use a rolling pin to roll them into thin discs.
Fill them with your favorite savory or sweet filling. Close real tight as you are frying the empanadas and you do not want to leak filling.
Store empanada dough
You can store this dough in a number of ways.
- Fridge – if you plan to make fried empanadas within 2 to 3 days you can store the dough in the fridge. Wrap the dough in plastic foil
- Freezer – you can either make the empanada discs or empanada shells in advance and stack them with baking paper in between the discs. Wrap all the discs in a plastic freezer bag. You can also make the dough and cut in portions you need and freeze.

- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2/3 cup sparkling water or still water add more if needed
- 1/2 cup butter
- 4 tablespoons of orange juice
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tablespoon of sugar – optional if you want to make a sweet dough
- Add the flour, salt, sugar (if using), and baking powder in a food processor
- Pulse to combine the ingredients
- Cut the butter in pieces, add and pulse until mixed
- Add ½ cup of water the sparkling water and the orange juice. Add more water if needed until you have an elastic dough
- Form a ball with the dough and knead lightly on a floured board
- Place the dough in a plastic wrap and let rest at room temperature for about a half-hour
- Make the empanada discs or shells with an empanada mold, use a plate or a tortilla press
- Ready to use
Make 12-15 medium-sized empanadas or about 20-24 small empanadas
